About the Artist
Kathrine lives and works in Brisbane/Meanjin, although she has lived in others states and cities of Australia, Brisbane will always be home.
As a school student she dreamed of studying art, however, she felt like she never really found her feet, feeling creatively adjacent to what was expected of her. (as her grade 8 teacher famously said, “Kathrine if you want to do calligraphy for the year instead of drawing and painting, that’s ok”.)
Later in life, living in Adelaide, Kathrine joined an art class, picking up oil paint for the first time and slowly her passion with painting began to unfold. Returning home to Brisbane, she joined Lilly-Lee Art School & Studios, where she was encouraged to express herself and experiment with different styles and subjects. Under the careful tutelage of Perrin Millard and Tanya Ashworth she has flourished, settling into her current style, and finally allowing her passion to evolve into a profession.
Art Style
Following an accident in which her eyesight was impacted. Kathrine found she was unable to see curved edges; in frustration she adapted her process. Using geometric shapes with solid forms and hard lined edges Kathrine used her painting practice to help improve her optical neuropathways. It was here; Kathrine found the visual stories she wanted to tell.
Using oil paints, and a minimalist art style, Kathrine primarily focuses on solid shapes and bold colour. Her paintings come to life in several layers, giving 2D images an almost 3D appearance. Sitting within a playful and nostalgic space, her work incorporates simple shaped objects like children’s blocks and Cuisenaire rods, bringing them to life through landscapes and architecture. She is also known to breathe art into everyday objects now and then.
Studio
You will often find Kathrine in her studio at Here Space in East Brisbane, where emersion and collaboration with a collective of diverse artists from painters to installation artists, enriches her practice. Kathrine is always happy to open her studio for viewing, by appointment.
